Maria Luisa Frisa is interested in the complexity of the contemporary image and the continuous contamination between art, fashion, design and communication. She has curated exhibitions such as Uniforme. Ordine e disordine (2001), Excess. Moda e underground negli anni Ottanta (2004), Lo Sguardo Italiano. La fotografia italiana di moda dal 1951 a oggi (2005), Human game. Vincitori e vinti (2006), Contromoda. La moda contemporanea della collezione permanente del Los Angeles County Museum of Art (2007), Simonetta. La prima donna della moda italiana (2008).
She is the director of the fashion design degree course at the IUAV University in Venice, as well as the fashion curator of the Pitti Discovery Foundation. She writes for the magazine L'Espresso.
