Gianfranco Maraniello

Gianfranco Maraniello has been the Director of the Institution of the Modern Art Gallery of Bologna since April 2005. In addition to the Morandi Museum and Villa delle Rose, the organisation also includes the new headquarters of MAMbo – the Modern Art Museum of Bologna. In 2006 he was a co-curator at the Shanghai Biennial.
He has curated numerous contemporary art exhibitions. He was the curator of MACRO, the Contemporary Art Museum of Rome (2002 – 2005), and of Palazzo delle Papesse – the Contemporary Art Centre of Siena (2000 – 2001).
From 2001 to 2005 he taught a course on the Aesthetic of the New Media at the Brera Fine Arts Academy in Milan, and he also taught master’s courses for curators at the Brera Academy and La Sapienza University in Rome.
He has been a regular contributor to various specialist magazines, including Flash Art (1993 – 2001) and BT – Japan (2000 – 2003), as well as being the art critic for the newspaper Il Riformista (2003 – 2005).
He has written numerous essays for books and catalogues as well as many monographs of artists. He also curated the book Arte in Europa 1990 - 2000 (Skira 2003).
