Chus Martinez was born in 1972 in Ponteceso, Galicia, Spain. After studying philosophy and history of art in Barcelona, she did a master degree in curatorial studies at Bard College in New York.

From 2002–2005 she worked as curator at the Sala Rekalde in Bilbao, Spain, and has been appointed Director of the Frankfurter Kunstverein from January 1, 2006, position that she left in 2008. She is a regular contributor to Afterall and correspondent for Flash Art.

From the 2008 she has been appointed chief curator at the MACBA - Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona. She co-curated exhibitions, installations, public interventions, screening programmes, and symposia for the 2nd Athens Biennale.
