The fourth edition of the festival of Contemporary art will go through the topics of modern day commissioning and collecting, thanks to different points of view, involving artists, curators, galleries, collectors and other protagonists of the contemporary art system, such as directors of international museums and foundations.
As always, artists will be especially invited to talk about their relationship with the topic of collecting. Some of them will be interviewed on this issue and others will present works of art created for a specific commission. Mark Dion will present his philosophy as an “artist-collector”. Joseph Kosuth, one of the main artists of the international art system, will be invited to talk about his life as an artist, from his work inspired by the motto “art as idea as idea” to the present time.
Besides, the festival will be the opportunity to look back at some important collectors, who have contributed to the career of many artists, who are currently in the pantheon of contemporary art history. As part of the series Vite parallele (Parallel lives), that refers to the title of the famous text by Plutarch, these stories will be compared, considering the different eras and changes in the art system. In this context, the writer Annie Cohen - Solal, professor at New York University and author of Leo & His Circle, will talk about the key figure of Leo Castelli.
The topic of collecting will be discussed involving different key figures of the art system.
Martin Bethenod, CEO of Palazzo Grassi, will lead the public inside the collection of Pinault and Punta della Dogana, which broke records in Italy during 2010, with 500,000 visitors.
Nicoletta Fiorucci, Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo and Giuliana Setari Carusi will be interviewed about activities and projects developed by the foundations they manage. These foundations have different characteristics and represent best practices for promoting contemporary art in Italy and in the world.
Some protagonists of the contemporary art world, such as Achille Bonito Oliva and Hans-Ulrich Obrist, who have contributed to the festival since its first edition thanks to their original and much appreciated vision of contemporary art and cultural hot topics, will be back in Faenza offering some of the key conferences of the event.
The complete list with all the key figures of Forms of collecting/Forme della committenza will be presented at the MAXXI on 17 February.
